This is what I have done to Treat Sores on Koi

I know when sores appear it is a Results of my Water Quality is not where the pond needs to be to keep the Optimum Health in my ponds water.

Remember….You have created a recirculation water feature. Mother has has millions of years to build up the natural bacteria’s in the streams, lakes and Oceans. The Water that flows thru is NEVER the same water.
Your water is in the same pond and recirculation every hour. You have created the water quality by Water Changes every week, Natural Bacteria every week and Maintence on your Filters and Pond.

  • Note: When water quality is gone and koi are sick it means that you don’t have enough of the good Natural Bacteria’s building up the water quality for your fish load and or size of your pond.

To get my Water Quality back in check. This is how I start:

* A good size water change in the pond it is in to reduce the count of anemones and pseudomonas in the ponds water.

The Water tells me how much of a water change I need to make:

- Clarity of the water.

- Is the water foamy any where and how much foam is there. [Foaming means too many organics in the water].

-Is the water Soupy looking and thick?
I want the water with no foam and the consistency like drinking water.

* Clean out the skimmers baskets, vaccum the bottom of the skimmer basin and pull out the pump and clean the bottom of the pump of debris. Water Falls, streams or any other water feature needs to be vacuumed of all debris.

* Back Wash Filters.

* Add more Sludge Away to help keep the floor of the pond clear. [This Actually Eats the Muck and Debris].

* Add your Natural Bacterial to build back your water quality:

-  PBL is a Nitrifying bacteria that develops the first stage of water quality from your filters and the sides of your pond. When you hear the word “NITRIFYING” think of the sewer systems in our cities. Bad water comes in the plant…They have lots of Filter Media and Natural Bacteria to reduce the toxic Water into clear clean water to be released back to nature.

- Clay for Second Stage of Water Quality.

- Koizyme [Koizyme will reduce the count of Aeromonas.

Treating the Sores on the Koi

IF YOU HAVE A MICROSCOPE…
ALWAYS SCROPE FIRST TO SEE WHAT IS CAUSING THE SORES..
LOOKING FOR PARASITES OR FLUKES.

I first look to see how serious the wound is.

Small Wounds

Options I use:
* Net the koi and keep the koi in the net.
* Pour Iodine on the wound [Never near the Gills] while koi is in the net.
* Return the Koi to Pond or Quarantine Tank.
* Clean up net you have just used to take the Iodine stains off the netting.
Note: You may need one treatment or up to 4 treatments. One each Day.
This is determined by the sores healing progress…

  • White around the edges of the sore means it’s healing well.
  • Red around the edges of the sores means the bacteria is still active.

* Keep the Pond or Quarantine Tank Vacuumed to keep all debris and the dead parasites/eggs of the parasites on the pond floor cleaned up.
* Feed Medicated Koi food for 15 days.
* Treat for Parasites and Flukes as directed on the bottle.

Large Wounds

Before we get started, I need to state that I am not a Veterinarian. I a showing you what I do for sores on koi and about water quality.

* Options I use:
List:
- 2] Plastic Container to hold koi in. Add an Air Pump with an Air Stone. Fill the Containers with the same Pond water the koi came from.
- Tweezers Hydrogen Peroxide
- Iodine or Bernadine
- Paper Towels
- Alcohol [Disinfect tweezers]
- Surgical Gloves for you and your help.
- Oil of Cloves [Relaxes the koi just enough to work on the koi] you can buy this at a Health Food Store.
- One other Person to help you.
- Injection of Baytril, Chloraphinacol or   an oil based injections…We look this up in

Any of the books published by koi vets in the U.S.A…See their books for injections and directions to use them. We are not vets and cannot recommend which to use and how. You can goggles this “Koi Vets

       Picture of two container

Setup to Clean the Wound and Treat the Wound

1. Set up both plastic Containers Side by Side as directed above.
Note: Temperature 3 to 5 degrees Difference will not shock the koi. This also keeps the pH..Etc. in balance.
I find if I move the koi to a Quarantine tank that does not have the same water...the Koi doesn’t do as well.
There are times this is not possible. It's better to do everything you can for the koi than do nothing.

- Container One s to treat with the Oil of Cloves.
- Container Two is to revive the Koi.

2. I place out 4 layers of paper towels [WET] on the table [Each Layer should be the length of the koi you are treating] and 2 paper towels separately [WET] and folded in Half to go over the eyes of the koi.

3. Net the koi you are treating and place in the plastic container with oxygen.
It depletes very quickly in this container. Never walk away from the container…Koi some times do Jump out of the containers.

4. I will start by adding 4 Drops of Oil of Cloves. [Waite 5 to 10 minutes between adding the next set of Oil of Cloves. Remember every koi reacts differently]

Don't over due the Oil of Cloves
[The purpose of the Oil of Cloves is to clam the koi down enough to be able to work on the koi with out it flipping all over the place and hurt it’s self. Every Koi reacts differently to the Oil of Cloves.]

* After 5 minutes I need to determine if I need more Oil of Cloves or not. If I more drops I will either use 2 drops or 4 more drops in and Waite 10 minutes.

* If I need more I add 2 more drops at a time until I can handle the koi and not have it wiggle around.

* The Dosage of the Oil of Cloves is determined by:
- Size of the Koi.
- Every Koi reacts differently.
NOTE: Have a fresh container of water ready with air so you can bring the koi out of the sleep and wake him up when you are done.

Working now with the Second Person

5. I have another person there to help me.

6. Place your Hand under the Koi by the Pectoral fins. Your Other Hand under the Tummy area near the anneal port. This will support the koi so he feels safe.

7. That person will place the koi on the paper towels on the table and they will hold
Down its head and tail. [Do Not Let the tail flap around. It will break blood vessels that way.]

Note: Picking up the Koi:.

Place koi on paper towel and cover eyes      cleaning the wound

8. You can now put the wet paper towels you fold over the eyes of the koi to keep it clam.
It helps to clam the koi just like you do with horses the: and extra two paper towels folded and wet to go over the eyes of the koi.

6. Sterilize the Tweezers with the alcohol.
- I will take a pair of tweezers and pull off any loose scales around the sore and clean it with hydrogen peroxide. Once the sore is cleaned up of any loose scales then go to the next step.

7. Pour the iodine or Bernadine over the wound. [Yes the Iodine stings and Bernadine does not sting the fish just like people]

8. Place the koi in the Fresh container of water that has the air stone in it.

Putting the koi in fresh water and wakening up koi.

9. Stay with the koi in the container of Fresh Water with air. Move the koi around so that the
Gills go thru the air bubbles from the air stone. Keep moving him around until he is swimming fine on it own.

Onces it's fine and awake and swimming okay. Put it back to the Pond or Quarantine Tank.

Setting up the Water in the Quarantine Tank

10. In a quarantine tank increase the Koizyme as much as triple the dosage to get as much of the Pseudomonas and Aeromonas count Down in Your Pond or Quarantine Tank.

Sores are caused by Parasites and or Flukes. Treat for Both....

Treatment for that Which Causes The Sores, Fin Rot, Tail Rot, Gill Disease:

I treat for both when a Microscope is Not Avaible......
NOTE: Always read the directions on the back of any medication you use for your koi....
Best to Get a Microscope then you can take a scraping before you treat your koi to know exactly what your treating and fighting against. Best to always scope first before treating.

Porform C is my Choice for Parasites and Fungal...

                                           Microscope          Slide with slide cover

Proform C Does not kill the eggs of the parasites to my knowledge.
This is how I do the 3 day treatment with my water changes as it directions on the back of the bottle. Always follow the instructions on the bottle.

Day 1

  • Water Change before starting a treatment.
  • 10% for normal treating or maintence treating.
  • 40% If disease is bad in pond.

* Add correct amount of Proform C to the pond.
Day 2

  • Water Change 15% to 20% Reason for water changes is that the Proform C works on the Organics in the pond also.
  • Add correct amount of Proform C to the pond.

Day 3

  • Water Change 15% to 20%
  • Back Wash your filters and vacuum the pond floor and skimmers in the basins.
  • Add correct amount of Proform C to the pond Add correct amount of Proform C to the proper amount of Prazi for your pond. Mix together. The Proform C will help dissolve the Prazi [for Flukes] pond.

[The parasites will hatch at different rates according to Temperature in the pond]
We want to get enough time from when you kill the initial parasite and when the eggs that those parasites laid will hatch and not be able to lay any more eggs.

Days 4 – 9

No Water Changes while it kills the last of the parasites and flukes.

Day 10
* 15% -20% Water Change
* Back Wash your filters and vacuum the pond floor and skimmers in the basins
* Add correct amount of Proform C to the pond

Day 11

  • Water Change 15% to 20% Reason for water changes is that the Proform C works on the Organics in the pond also.
  • Add correct amount of Proform C to the pond.

Day 12

  • Water Change 15% to 20%
  • Add correct amount of Proform C to the pond

Then you are done.

Then Rescope them after the treatment and a week later to make sure you have kills the parasite or flukes you’re dealing with.

When koi get sick ... REMEMBER...diseases never attack in one's or two’s...You end up treating for up to 4 to 5 things at one time.

That's why you treat for: Parasite, Flukes and Bacterial infections...And to make sure it doesn’t go systemic and kill your koi fast.

Sores around the Mouth Area

There are two ways I treat the mouth sores.

  1. I will Dab Iodine or Bernadine on a swab and dab the mouth area.
  2. I will take a plastic bag and cut a hole in the bottom corner of the bag for the

Face of the koi to go thru.

    • Catch the koi with a net and place in bag with No Water.
    • Place the face of the koi through the hold in the bag.
    • Fold a piece of paper towel into four folds. Put Iodine on the paper towel and Dab the Koi’s mouth.
    • Release the koi back into the pond or quarantine tank.
  1. Repeat as needed.

Cut bag                  placing koi in bag          dabbing iodine on mouth

Note:
-White edges around the sores means it is healing.
- Red around the sores edge means the bacterial infection is still active.
- Consult a Koi Vet or one of his books to see if injections apply.

Water Quality should be checked …..

Water Quality. Do as directed above.
